A New Year, a new photographic experience

Well it’s almost time to turn over the syllabus to a new page.  We appear to be half way through the programme so what is ahead for the New Year?  We kick off with our very own Tony McLean who is doing a practical demonstration of platinum printing.  If you want to see what an unsung star we have in our midst then go to http://www.tonymclean.com and view some of his work.  This should be a really interesting evening of top quality photographic work.  Peter would also like a good selection of prints (both monochrome and colour) and DPIs from which to select our entry to the Norman Trophy.  This interclub competition is named after one of our founders, Norman Stockton who died in 2008 and it would be a fitting memorial to him for DPS to win the trophy this year.  In the last few months we have seen some great images from members so bring them along for Peter and his selection committee to have a really wide choice of work to represent us.

This is followed by a club night with no particular theme.  If there is some area which you want to be shown in more detail, e.g. mounting, printing, photoshop etc or which we have missed then see one of the committee and we will try to set something up.  This is the closing day for the FRS competition (see below).

On the 19th we have Tony McLean again showing us what we could do with our masterpieces.  He will be discussing book publishing among other ways of presenting your pictures.  We all have pictures of which we are proud or which have personal meaning and a book would be a great way to retain and present them.

On the 26th we welcome Dave Southall along to judge the FRS trophy.  This was for Four Related Slides but is now for DPIs.  The images can be of similar objects e.g.birds, events, photographic types e.g portraits, be chronological and tell a story (e.g. grain, field, harvest and weetabix!) or whatever you can think of.  Get your mind into gear and camera into action.  This is the closing day for the Maynard, the YCPG version of FRS.  Peter will welcome sets in addition to those entered in FRS.

The committee hope you have a Merry Christmas and wish you all good lighting and interesting subjects for 2009 and a handy camera to capture them!

P.S. if you are interested in trying to do a ‘365′ in 2009 see Ernie who is toying with the idea and could do with a few ‘365′ buddies.

Newsletter No.2

October 28th, 2008

Well, the first month and a bit have gone already.  I was hoping to produce one of these newsletters each month but this one is already too late.  Never mind, here goes for number two.

Starting with the 20th October we have a change of judge for the 2000 trophy, our digital colour print competition.  Unfortunately Bob Crowe from Bridlington is not well enough to do it so Vice Chairman Tony McLean has stepped up to the mark and agreed to give us the benefit of his judging skills.  I’m sure he will do a great job and will be able to justify his opinions if he doesn’t choose my set as winner!!

The following Monday, (27th) Tony is on holiday and Ernie will be delivering Milne 1 photographs on the only night he has available that week.  Their talk on Photoshop will therefore happen later.   We have however re-scheduled Alan Curtis to present his talk on Postcard Photography which he couldn’t give us in September.

On Friday 31st a group of DPS will be presenting a night at Malton in return for the night they gave us last year.  If anyone wants to come along and support us (we need some friendly faces in the audience) talk to one of the committee members or organise your own transport.

On the 3rd of November we have the first round of the Milne Cup and Trophy competitions, a three round running fight. The judge is a photographer called Daren Smith from Cherry Burton who has some lovely stuff on Flickr and this summer had an exhibition of monochrome prints at the National Park centre in Hawes.  He is also presenting an evening of wet process monochrome prints for us on December 1st, definitely not a night to miss!

On the 6th and 7th of November we have two external competitions at New Earswick and Beverley (details from Pete Boyes). And on Monday the 10th we have another speaker, John Horton from Kilham, who is giving us an evening of wildlife photography with the emphasis on birds.

On November 17th we are experimenting with a Novice Cup for new members and members who have never come in the top 3 of any competition before.  The rules are printed on the other side of this newsletter.  This was one of the requests which came out of last year’s questionnaire and we are hoping for a good entry. Entries should be in by 3rd November please.

The last Monday of November sees the Arnold English Trophy for sequences which will be judged on the night and the Ringrose for a set of five DPIs on set subjects which last years winner Roy is judging.

We hope that you will be able to find something in this lot to entertain and instruct you, if not, complain to the committee!!
